Choosing for a New Drone

For most people, there is no point in spending so much to get a drone because in the eyes of unfamiliar users, they are just toys that we can control from afar, similar to the remote controlled airplanes we used to play back then. But, while it is initially a toy, with a different mechanism than the common remote controlled airplane, in modern days drones are identical with imagery or the process of capturing image and video from above the ground.

In the market, to shorten the options we can compile drones into two types of machines; those large enough we have to fly outdoors and those small alternatives that can take some low resolution image or don’t have any camera at all. Depending on which fits in your preference the most, these tech can also be controlled with either controller or smartphone. Usually the more affordable alternatives are simpler so a phone app will be enough yet to fly something decent enough we will most likely need the physical controller.

If budget is not an issue to you, price is probably the most convenient way to shop the choice but, the price stated is not enough to tell you what to expect from the unit. When looking for a good drone, make sure they have decent battery life because they run only with battery and it needs to recharge every so often. Typically they will struggle to last for 30 minutes at once charge so make sure to have spare batteries as well or include these additional accessories when you set the budget.

There are also systems with brushed and brushless motors in which brushed motors are usually less expensive in comparison. The thing is while your brushless system is costly, they also run a longer lifespan and are less noisy when operation means we don’t have to spend as often renewing the gear. If you will be taking pictures or videos with the drone, make sure to see what the camera can offer or whether they let you attach a camera on the body.

For those who are capable of spending more, you may want to have GPS in the system which will turn out to give you information where the machine is currently at and it can even improve their ability to navigate as well such as hover over a large hurdle. The best thing is probably some system has an RTH function which helps the machine to go back to its base or to you. If you ever see a drone following the owner, some of them can work based on an object you decide.

About Bebop 2 and Mavic Mini

Just like with anything, it is best to consider what you will need from the unit first before deciding the options since not all of us will have the same preference or budget to spend. To simplify the shopping journey, it is also quick to see what the other customers are buying lately because if a product is liked by most people then they have a high chance to satisfy you as well. If you are here then we assume that the drone is meant for taking aerial videos or photos so we will need a camera on the unit.

Most popular drones today have one already because this is where the hobbyists are at. They can be used to take a view of an area we can’t physically or legally enter and the view from up there is just different from for example when we carry the camera handheld. When it comes to drones, Parrot and DJI are two common choices so you will go amazing with their products. Many love their system for good performance and reliable navigation as well as satisfying image quality.

Among the collection we have the Bebop 2 and Mavic Mini that are ideal for your first device or if you want to give them as a present during someone’s birthday. The two are about the same now at sub $500 but DJI is much cheaper so we understand why they are such an attractive option to purchase. It may not be very apparent from the picture above but they are very small actually with the main body can fit on your grip.

The starter drones are coming with many capabilities however and we do think they are fun for taking images or videos from above the ground. The two carry a decent camera as well that will be able to capture good images but, in comparison the Mavic Mini is actually more capable in terms of capturing the scenery. They supposedly are able to fly 30 and 25 minutes respectively but in reality probably around the latter number yet, it is still an ample amount of time to enjoy the view.

Bebop 2 and Mavic Mini Design

Depending on where you live, some countries have regulations to limit the usage of drones due to its potential interference such as with commercial aircraft. This resulting in drones weighing more than 250 grams need to be registered first, such as to the FAA if you live in the U.S. The Bebop 2 was quite an old drone and it is almost 500 grams. On the other hand Mavic Mini is probably only 2-years old this year and already less than 250 grams, 249 grams to be exact which means we can bypass the registration step.

They are very compact on hand because DJI is famous with petite drones and the Mavic Mini is just very small, moreover when the arms and propellers are folded; they are almost the size of a regular smartphone. When getting the drone, you will get a battery, charger, USB cable, 8 propellers, and assembly tool with Bebop 2 while the latter has remote control, battery, propellers, USB cable, gimbal protector, and spare control stick for the basic kit of Mavic Mini; the Combo kit adds charging hub, propeller guard, and another battery.

Bebop 2 and Mavic Mini Setup

Just like with any drones, we need to do calibration before flying and while it can be annoying for some, we believe it is for a better experience. Since the Bebop 2 does not come with the controller, what we need to do is just open the app on your smart device, choose the menu, and follow the on-screen command, similar to the Mavic Mini but here we have to set up the controller with our phone first. It depends on your setting, usually the app will launch automatically when the controller is connected.

DJI Mavic Mini

Bebop 2 and Mavic Mini Camera

As a camera mounted drone, you will expect to see the scenery with Bebop 2 and Mavic Mini. They come with built-in cameras but at different quality because DJI already packs a 2.7K video recording at 30fps in this model, a step down from the Pro but is great for most of us while the Bebop 2 is still with its 1080p at 30fps. If it is only for fun and as a toy, the video resolution may not be as important but nowadays our smartphone can record 4K already so it is just underwhelming for Bebop 2.

Another thing that will affect your video quality is their stabilization which is available in both drones. The Mavic Mini has 3-axis stabilization, similar to what Bebop 2 have but, DJI is using a motorized-gimbal which means this is a mechanical stabilization instead of digital on the other camera. This helps navigating the footage by moving the camera itself in order to stabilize and focus on a certain spot. The Bebop 2 can do this but digitally so besides cropping you may have to experience black area or shutter artifacts while navigating.

Bebop 2 and Mavic Mini Experience

Last but not least let’s talk about the experience with Bebop 2 and Mavic Mini. The two are family-friendly, affordable, drones for fun. Personally we prefer a controller since it feels more intuitive but people’s taste can be different. There are no sensors on these drones so we have to rely on our own judgment and they are not quiet either, so not very suitable to be used near many people. In addition, while flying them is fun, especially for Mavic Mini you may lose sight of it often as it is very small.

Bebop 2 vs Mavic Mini

The differences between Bebop 2 and Mavic Mini is mostly because of the age since Bebop 2 is an older system, it falls behind in some of the new and cheaper technology as well where Mavic Mini is able to take advantage. The video result of 2.7K is amazing and more appealing to today’s market, especially when it comes with a motorized gimbal as well. In addition it is small and light, making it easy to carry while you travel or with the addition of external memory so we have a larger capacity to store files.

- Enhanced 14 megapixel fish-eye lens offers 1080p video recording and stunning image capture
- 25 minutes of flight time thanks to a powerful 2700 mAh battery

- Mavic Mini supports 12MP aerial photos and 2.7K HD videos. A 3-axis motorized gimbal provides superior camera stability and ensures clear, Ultra-smooth footage
- Mavic Mini’s weight allows it to stay in the air longer than similar consumer FlyCams on the market. Enjoy up to 30 minutes of flight time with a fully-charged battery

Conclusion

The option is all yours because the two are interesting drones yet personally we like and recommend the Mavic Mini because it is more compact and modern, moreover with physical controller and better image quality in a more affordable price tag.
